I just finished watching this week’s episode of Heroes.  And it got me to thinking… about half way through the episode I just wanted it to be over, the episode the series the whole thing.  I just wanted the storyline to be wrapped up in a neat little package.  But by the end of the episode I just wished the next episode were here.

See the thing is they have such drama about it.  There are so many storylines, and they weave in and out of each other with intricate precision.  I just love it.  There are moments when I think I cant stand the drama, I just want things to go back to normal and the tension to cease.  But then things move in such a way that I’m just excited and hopeful for what the next week will bring.  Guess that’s how you create a cult following.

Alright guys.  I’ve made a decision.  Which to most of you might not sound like much of anything, but to me its kind of a big thing.  I’ve decided that with the exception of The Closer and the occasional movie I wont be watching any more TV this summer.  This is a big thing for me.  I’ve noticed the last few weeks I’ve just had the thing on constantly while I’m around the house.  Which wouldnt be so bad if I got stuff done, but more and more I’m just sitting in front of it staring listlessly.  So I got to thinking, could I go without it?  Self control has not been one of my strong points as an adult (the scale in my bathroom could tell you all about that) but I am dissatisfied with the way that I am in regards to a lot of things, so this is where I’ll start.

I have a confession…. I am addicted (and I really mean ADDICTED) to Law and order. Today there was a Law and Order Memorial Day marathon (I know… totally exciting right?). Well throughout the day at a breaking point from the fam I caught parts of an episode or two (ok I’ll admit it was actually 3… that’s the first step right? Admitting your problem?). Well I’d seen each episode at least 3 or maybe 4 times, but it didnt matter I watched for as long as I was able anyway. And tonight after time with the fam was over Scott and I watched 3 episodes together. I’d seen each one of them but I watched enthralled wondering what that verdict would be.

I often wonder (yes often) why the series so intrigues me and I’ve come to a conclusion. Its Jack McCoy, he’s the foundation. Its mostly what he stands for as a character – Jack always tries to do the right thing. His moral compass is always pointing north – justice is what he always seeks and he often goes about obtaining justice for “the people” in unconventional ways. Built upon that foundation there are levels of humor, history, and downright good stories. Most of the time when Scott and I watch the show together we find ourselves discussing our thoughts on the issues they are covering – abortion, assisted suicide, the role of our judicial branch in legislating law, how we would deal with the loss of a child and on and on. Name one other show on television that has such a long reputation for high quality production and mass appeal. Of course we all remember those awful years during the 90s when things werent so bright, but we had Lenny to see us through. So i salute you Law and Order and I wish you many more years of insightful and provocative stories.

I love love love Betty (as in Ugly Betty on ABC on Thursday nights – dont ask me what time its on I dont know – I just DVR it). I guess I just love Betty because I see parts of me in her. I think we all can find parts of ourselves in Betty. She doubts herself and worries and loves life in her way and grows and changes and thinks (often out loud). And it makes me happy – she’s not perfect, but in a nice way. So watch it – next season I guess when it airs. Because the season finale was tonight.
